Songcheng: the recreated Song town around the show
The show is the headline, but the ticket is for a whole theme park. Here's what Songcheng is, and how to make a day of it.

Songcheng — literally 'Song City' — is a large theme park on the western side of Hangzhou, built as an immersive recreation of a Song-dynasty town. Within it are streets and squares dressed in period style, costumed performers, folk-craft displays, smaller staged shows and attractions, all leading up to the grand theatre that hosts the Romance of the Song Dynasty. It belongs to a family of Songcheng parks across China, but the Hangzhou original, tied to the city's own Southern Song history, is the flagship.
A half-day, not a drop-in
Because entrance to the park is bundled with the show ticket, the sensible approach is to treat the visit as a half-day rather than a quick in-and-out for the performance. Arriving in the afternoon gives you time to wander the recreated streets, catch some of the smaller street theatre and folk performances, and soak up the setting before the main show. Visitors who turn up only for their showtime tend to feel they left value on the table.
Timing your day around the show
You select the performance slot when you book, so plan the day backwards from it: allow a couple of hours in the park beforehand, factor in busy-day queues at entry, and leave the showtime itself as the centrepiece. If you're combining Songcheng with West Lake, an afternoon at the lake followed by a late-afternoon or evening park visit and show is a natural rhythm, keeping everything on the western side of the city.
Entry and passports
Real-name registration is standard for attractions in China, so bring the passport you used to book for park admission. Requirements can change, so check the current entry details on the listing before you go, and build in extra time during Chinese public holidays and school breaks, when Hangzhou and its attractions are exceptionally busy and entry lines are longest.
Getting there and around
Songcheng is reachable from central Hangzhou by metro, taxi or ride-hailing, and sits close enough to West Lake to pair the two in a day. Wear comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet around a large park — and, since it's an outdoor-and-indoor mix, dress for the day's weather; Hangzhou summers are hot and humid, while the show's grand theatre itself is indoors and climate-controlled.
